SPORT - highlights of 2006

In 2006 WPPS entered one senior and one junior team into the Kuring-gai Primary Schools Sporting Association (PSSA) modball competition. Due to our success in previous years competing in Division 2, this year we were advanced to Division 1.

West Pymble entered a senior and junior cricket team in the Division 1 PSSA competition against six schools from across the Kuring-gai area. The games took place on Friday of terms 1 and 4. Both teams reached the semi-finals.

During the winter season, WPPS entered a senior and a junior soccer team into the PSSA competitionin Division 2. Both teams reached the division finals. The WPPS senior soccer team were the 2006 Division 2 champions.

Four netball teams were entered into the winter PSSA competition - two senior and two junior. The children were from years 4-6. During terms 2 and 3, the teams played each Friday at Canoon Courts in Turramurra. The junior D team and the senior C team were successful in reaching the semi finals. The junior D team made it through to the final and finished as runners up.

Students in years 3-6 and students turning 8 years of age from year 2 participated in school carnivals in swimming, cross country and athletics, with some students continuing onto both the zone and area levels in each of these competitions.

The intra-school school sport program was held on Friday afternoons for all students in years 3-6 not competing in the inter-school PSSA competition. Activities included: modified cricket, soccer, tennis as well as activities to develop skills in athletics.

All K-2 students participated in weekly aerobic and dance sessions during terms 1, 2 and 3. K-2 also participated in a weekly sports skills and gross motor program that involved parental assistance. The program concentrated on appropriate stage related activities focusing on skill development and game skills.

During term 4 Tri Skills provided an excellent gymnastics program with two trained instructors. Gymnastics classes were funded by parents.

The K-2 Athletics Carnival was held at the beginning of term 4. The students participated in running races and novelty events incorporating skills they had learnt in the weekly gross motor lessons.

During term 4, Year 2 participated in a two week intensive learn to swim program which provided students with an opportunity to develop water confidence and basic skills in water safety and survival.

Throughout term 2 the students were provided with ropes for lunch time skipping. This culminated in a whole-school jump off day to raise money for the Heart Foundation.
